Common Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid these frequent errors that prevent your Instagram data export from working correctly with our analyzer.
Uploading HTML Instead of JSON
Instagram offers two export formats: HTML and JSON. Many users accidentally download the HTML version, which cannot be parsed by our analyzer. The HTML format is designed for human reading in a browser, not for data extraction.
Selecting Wrong Data Categories
When exporting your Instagram data, you might be tempted to select all categories. However, including unnecessary data like posts, stories, and messages makes the ZIP file much larger and can slow down the analysis process significantly.
Not Choosing "All Time" Date Range
The default date range for Instagram exports may only cover the past year or a shorter period. If you don't change it, the exported data will be incomplete, and you won't get an accurate picture of who has unfollowed you over your entire account history.
Editing the ZIP File
Some users try to extract, rename, or modify files inside the ZIP archive before uploading. Any modification to the ZIP structure — including extracting, editing, and re-compressing — can corrupt the data format and cause the analyzer to fail or produce incorrect results.
How It Works FAQs
Got questions about how UnfollowersTracker works? Here are the answers to the most commonly asked questions.
Instagram typically processes data export requests within 2 to 5 minutes. However, in some cases — especially during peak usage times — it may take up to 48 hours. Once your export is ready, Instagram will send you an email notification with a download link. The link is valid for a limited time, so make sure to download the ZIP file promptly after receiving the email. If you don't see the email within 10 minutes, check your spam or junk folder.
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a structured data format that our analyzer can read and process automatically. When Instagram exports your data in HTML format, the information is embedded in web pages designed for visual display — not for data extraction. JSON, on the other hand, contains your follower and following lists in a clean, structured format that allows our tool to accurately compare who follows you versus who you follow. Without JSON, the analysis simply cannot be performed. This is why it's critical to select JSON during the export setup.
Absolutely. Your privacy and security are our top priorities. UnfollowersTracker processes your Instagram data entirely within your browser — nothing is uploaded to our servers. When you upload your ZIP file, the analysis happens locally on your device using client-side JavaScript. This means your data never leaves your computer, and we never have access to your follower information, usernames, or any other personal data. There is no login required, no passwords shared, and zero risk to your Instagram account.
Yes, UnfollowersTracker works on mobile devices including both Android and iOS. You can request your Instagram data export from the Instagram mobile app, and then download the ZIP file to your phone. Once downloaded, visit our website on your mobile browser and upload the ZIP file. The entire process — from export request to viewing your unfollower analysis — can be completed on your phone without needing a desktop computer. The interface is fully responsive and optimized for mobile screens.
You should upload the ZIP file that Instagram sends you via email after your data export is complete. Do NOT extract or unzip the file before uploading — our analyzer reads the ZIP archive directly. The file should have a .zip extension and be the exact file you downloaded from the Instagram email link. If you accidentally extracted the ZIP, you would need to request a new export from Instagram. Make sure the export was done in JSON format with "Followers and following" selected and "All time" as the date range for the best results.
